Purpose: The nomenclature of the wild strawberries inhabited in Sri Lanka is ambiguous. In Lanka, this species still named Duchesnea indica which needs a revision. Wild grow well natural habitats upcountry Lanka. Since commercial strawberry cultivations gain popularity upcountry, studies on essential for crop improvement and management.Research Method: present study, we conducted extensive field sampling followed by phylogenetic analysis with DNA barcoding markers ITS and, trnL-F using representative sample plants distribution was identified maximum entropy modeling approaches.Findings: Lankan got placed at subtribe: Potentilla, clade: Reptans show shallow divergence Potentilla reported. Thus, reposition genus from to hereafter name it as P. indica. niche model predicted highly restricted Nuwara-Eliya district over an area 166.36 km2 altitude range 1546 - 2524 m small climatic envelop highlighting need urgent conservation measures.Research Limitations: pop-set available literature limited comparison. Extensive based sequencing needed further validation.Originality / Value: Taxonomy, narrow distribution, conservation, distance Fragaria chiloensis, progenitor cultivated strawberry, are defined strawberries.
